The Electric Vehicle Driver Training Course provides comprehensive knowledge and practical experience for drivers transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs).

Combining a short theory workshop with practical on-road instruction, this course helps drivers understand EV technology, maximise efficiency, and drive safely while reducing environmental impact.

Course benefits:

This course helps drivers understand and adapt to the key differences in electric and hybrid vehicle operation.

You’ll gain an understanding of:

  • Different charging methods and how the UK charging network is structured
  • Battery maintenance and best practice for longevity
  • The importance of regular charging (topping up) and factors that influence range
  • Techniques to maximise range and driving efficiency
  • The concept of “vampire drain” and how to reduce energy loss
  • How to manage EV torque and smoother acceleration
  • The function and benefits of regenerative braking
  • Journey planning that considers charging points, range, and route efficiency

Course Structure:

This is a bespoke on-road training course designed for drivers of electric vehicles up to 4.25 tonnes.

The course is delivered 1:1 and lasts approximately three hours.

Each session is delivered by a DVSA Fleet Approved Driver Trainer, combining both classroom and practical elements:

  • Introduction to EV systems and safety
  • Understanding charging methods and range optimisation
  • On-road driving assessment and feedback
  • Real-world application of torque management and regenerative braking
  • Risk assessment grading and recommendations for further improvement

At the end of the course, you’ll receive a Driving Risk Assessment Report with feedback and a graded outcome:

  • Low Risk: No further action required
  • Medium Risk: Recommendations for improvement provided
  • High Risk: Further training recommended

Candidates must provide the vehicle, which must be:

  • Roadworthy, taxed and insured for training purposes
  • Clean, safe and legally compliant

Your trainer will perform a brief vehicle inspection before the session begins.
